This quick Apple and Blackberry Crumble is ready in just 30 minutes and offers a deliciously warm, sweet comfort food experience. By cooking the apples in a skillet on the stovetop first, we slash the oven time in half without sacrificing any of the rich, bubbly fruit flavor or crispy oat topping.
Preheat your oven's broiler to high and position an oven rack about 6 inches below the heat source.
In a medium bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, a pinch of salt, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter.
Stir the oat mixture thoroughly with a fork until it forms clumpy, wet sand-like textures, then set it aside for the topping.
Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter in an 8-inch oven-safe skillet over medium heat, then add the sliced apples, maple syrup, and ground cinnamon.
Cook the apples for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften and turn a light golden color.
Gently fold in the fresh blackberries during the last minute of cooking so they begin to release their juices without breaking down completely.
Spread the fruit evenly across the skillet, then sprinkle the prepared oat crumble topping uniformly over the top.
Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and broil for 3 to 4 minutes, watching very closely, until the oat topping is deeply golden brown and the fruit is bubbling at the edges.
Remove carefully from the oven using oven mitts and let cool for 5 minutes before serving with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
